Ligature is basicly only for the beauty. But japanese printing history has different way. For example, threre are グラム and ㌘(=gram) in japanese font. These meanings and letters are perfectly same. But second one is combined into a single character like a ligature. This is not a common way. we dont't use it usually. But sometime we can see it on a newspaper or a magazine.
