spent the morning reflecting on my year. this year was the first year i have ever made a resolution. my resolution was simple: stop using superlatives. our current global culture is inundated with superlatives. attention grabbers and clickbaity vocabulary have subsumed us in an attention economy fueled by vanity and unbridled capitalism that erode the principles of kindness, generosity, and care within the social contract. narcissim has sidelined camaraderie. care, compassion, and empathy have become performative. linguistic extremism and our overreliance on superlatives (born out of advertising and commercial culture) have made everything more or less meaningless.
a year without superlatives has taught me to appreciate things as they are and not to treat everything as a competition. i no longer worry about something being superior to another thing. i appreciate things for what and where they are. i have a much deeper appreciation for context. my tools have become more meaningful. my old cameras, my old computer, and my old printing machines no longer feel outdated or less-than. my relationship to my community and the people around me has strengthened as i am no longer digging for superficial relationships i can trick myself into being more rewarding than others.
i tell you, a year without superlatives has been a wonderful exercise and i will try to make it a lifelong practice. should you give it a try? heck yes, go for it. do you have to completely cut superlatives out? no! but i think we could all benefit from being mindful of how we use them. one of the greatest benefits is the easy rejection of what influencers and corporations are trying to sell you on. trust me, nothing is the best. a search driven by finding the best of something is a meaningless and empty pursuit. it is also something wired into the colonial mindset so for me, it is something worth abandoning.

mapping tiny spaces with my feet. crunchy leaves in the garden. the neighbour is chopping down banana trees with his machete.
